In Lisa Bäck’s objet d’art “Rest in Peace” hostile barbed wire becomes a symbol of peace. She has shaped the wire, which divides people from each other when used in a fence, into the form of the dove of peace; now, in upward flight and set on a white silk velvet cushion, the dove offers the hope of a more peaceful world. While part of global society enjoys a comfortable existence, a much larger population is denied this prosperity, not least through the isolation of the privileged classes. Using the delicate etching technique she developed, Lisa Bäck has inscribed the initials of the title of this objet d’art – RIP – into the surface of the textile at several points. ”Velvet Paintings” is Lisa Bäck’s designation for her art; with it she creates a three-dimensional structure that shimmers variously as it catches the light and can also symbolize diversity.
